Great Small Business Tips For Turning Your Hobby Into A Job

small business tips Apr 23, 2020

Starting a small business from a hobby may seem like a dream, but it is becoming more and more prevalent in today's society to turn a passion into a legitimate income with your own online course.

Whether you'll be selling crafts online or teaching classes from the comfort of your own home, there will be some steps you need to take in order to ensure you are down the right path to an online small business success.

Here are four small business tips to get you started off on the right foot.

1. Take Time to Perfect Your Skill

Before you go and quit your full-time job, you want to make sure you are fully capable of producing quality results.

Dive deeper into your hobby and see if there are any areas that could use some fine-tuning. Scour through your resources to see if there are any training courses or ways to build on to your existing skills to make them more profitable.

2. Build an Online Course... it's EASY

Right now most of the world is in quarantine. If you're like me and you want to use this time at home to better yourself or your career, build an online course. There is literally no better time to do this than now. No matter your hobby or passion, there are people out there willing to pay you for your knowledge on the subject.

Imagine making extra money off your passion. That's what I did years ago when I built on online course using Kajabi. It cost me nothing but my time to build. I got a free trial, then made my first sale before the trial was up, so I never spent one dollar out of pocket. 100% of my money was profit. Let me say that again. It cost me NOTHING to build an online business. Yes, it takes 5+ days to build a course, but if you're building it while on quarantine you have plenty of time - don't miss this opportunity!

3. Find Your Target Market and Network

Take some time to think about who makes up your target market. A good way to do this is to create a few avatars for prospective clients.

To create target market avatars, you'll want to look very closely at your ideal client. Build a very detailed profile for what your ideal clients look like.

Once you have an idea of who your target market is, start networking. Networking can be done with friends, family, your local community, and your online social media community ( my fav!). Build a website for your portfolio, get an Instagram page ( or up-date the one you have to fit your new brand) and print some business cards to get your name out there.

Don't be scared to DM potential customers or even celebrities on social media. I use my DMs on Instagram daily to network or reach out to potential clients that need my services all the time. The worse that will happen is they say no or don't respond. Not a big deal!

4. Land Your First Sale

You've perfected your skills, made a course, and found your perfect clientele... now it's time to put your wheels in motion.

Running a sale or promotion, like offering a sample of your work or free download in exchange for a testimonial or review, is a great way to hook new clients. If you produce amazing results they are highly likely to become paying clients that provide you with lots of referrals.
